## Overview

The diamondback moth is one of the world's most widespread and destructive agricultural pests. This small nocturnal moth has a wingspan of just 12-16 millimeters and is characterized by its narrow, grayish-brown wings with distinctive light-colored diamond-shaped markings along the trailing edge when the wings are folded. The species' scientific name, Plutella xylostella, derives from Greek words meaning 'wealth' and 'wood', though the species is now primarily associated with brassica crops.

The diamondback moth undergoes complete metamorphosis from egg to larva, pupa, and adult moth. The larvae are small, green caterpillars that are the actual crop pests. They feed on the leaves of cruciferous plants, especially various types of cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and rapeseed. A female moth can lay up to 300 eggs during her lifetime, allowing populations to explode under favorable conditions. In warm temperatures, the entire life cycle can be completed in just 2-3 weeks, meaning multiple generations can occur per season in warmer climates.

This species has developed a remarkable ability to resist pesticides. The diamondback moth was the first insect documented to develop resistance to DDT in the 1950s, and today it is resistant to most insecticides used against it. This makes it an extremely difficult problem for farmers worldwide. Damage from the diamondback moth costs the global agricultural industry an estimated 4-5 billion dollars annually.

Despite its small size, the diamondback moth is an impressive long-distance flyer. The moths can migrate hundreds of kilometers and have been documented traveling across large bodies of water to remote islands. In northern Europe and Scandinavia, they often appear in spring and summer after migrating from more southern latitudes, as they cannot overwinter in colder climates. Their ability to spread rapidly has made them a truly global problem.

## Habitat

The diamondback moth can adapt to a range of climates from tropical to temperate zones. In warmer regions they can be active year-round and complete 20-30 generations per year, while in more northern areas they are only present during summer months. They are found from sea level to high altitudes where agriculture is practiced, and can colonize new areas very quickly thanks to their long-distance flight capability.

## Seasonal Behavior

In Scandinavia and northern Europe, the diamondback moth is primarily a summer visitor that migrates in from southern Europe and the Mediterranean region from May to September. They cannot overwinter in cold climates as neither eggs, larvae, nor adult moths can survive frost. During warm summers they can complete 2-3 generations in the Nordic countries before dying off with autumn's cold temperatures. In southern Europe and warmer climates, the species is active year-round, with population peaks during spring and autumn when temperatures are optimal and crops are most nutritious.
