The Asian golden cat is a medium-sized wild cat that inhabits the dense forests of Southeast Asia. Despite its name, this cat is not always golden – its fur color varies from reddish-brown and golden-yellow to gray and even coal black! It has a robust body with relatively short legs and a long, thick tail that helps it balance when climbing trees. The ears are rounded and the face has distinctive white and black markings that make each individual unique. This captivating cat is a skilled hunter that is mostly active at dawn and dusk. It has powerful jaws and sharp claws that make it a feared predator in its habitat. The Asian golden cat hunts everything from rodents and birds to small deer and monkeys. It is a solitary hunter that prefers to stalk its prey silently through the dense undergrowth. The Asian golden cat lives in mountainous regions and rainforests from Nepal and northeastern India through Southeast Asia to Sumatra. It thrives at elevations from sea level up to 3,700 meters above sea level. The species is very secretive and difficult to study in the wild, which means we still know surprisingly little about their lifestyle. Unfortunately, the Asian golden cat is classified as Near Threatened due to habitat loss and illegal hunting. The rainforests that are their home are being destroyed rapidly to make way for agriculture and development. In some parts of Asia, the cat is also hunted for its fur and for use in traditional medicine, despite the lack of scientific support for any medicinal effects.
